Ability to edit messages after sending
My favorite feature of Skype chat is the ability to edit a previous post to fix a typo, clarify, or remove something posted to a wrong room to avoid the inevitable ???s and additional correction and 'oops wrong room' posts that dirty up the thread.
Clearly there would need to be an indication that a post had been modified. Even better would be to be able to 'unhide' deleted posts or view edit history (for those who might be concerned about thread accuracy).
It could also be a feature that could be enabled/disabled by admins depending upon internal policies.

Add Github's emoji set
This set is rapidly becoming the "standard" for emoji. HipChat should support these by default.

Group audio and/or video conferencing
Permit audio/video conferencing within a room. Use multicast or similar to broadcast the video/audio to all participants.

Mention large groups
It would be super useful to be able to invite a large swath of people at once to a room. For example, if a build server is going to go down for an update, it would be great to be able to create a Announcement room, and ask the whole dev team to join it with something like @dev.

Per-room notification settings
Some rooms I want to follow more closely than others. I'd like to be notified in a more active way when there's activity in particular rooms. For activity in the other rooms, I'd rely on more passive cues (like the room title being red).

I want an easy way to catch up on conversation that's happened while I was out of a room.
Seems like this is a very common use case, but I can't seem to find a way to do it:
1. I leave a room
2. Conversation happens in that room
3. I come back to the room and want to read over what has happened while I was gone.I don't have an easy/quick way to know where I had left, or what is new.

Allow audio-only voice chat (no video needed)
Not everyone at my company has video cameras connected to their PCs. But we want an easy, low-bandwidth way for people to talk to each other. Can you enable audio-only voice chat?

Windows Phone App
A Windows Phone app would mean the world to those of us who aren't on iOS or Android. Using the full-web version on a smartphone is a bit of a pain.

Allow HipChat to recognize issue IDs and auto link them to the proper JIRA issue.
If we type in a JIRA issue ID, say PROJECT-123, it should link to the issue page in our JIRA server.

Ability to control delay for idle / away status (or turn it off)
So you're not marked idle right away, allow idle option to change when you go idle to 10, 15 or 20 minutes, or when your computer goes idle/sleep.

Quick way of creating a group chat / ad-hoc room
Like a group huddle or a corridor meeting, some quick way to have a group discussion and then disband. Unlike chat rooms - these groups discussions are one offs and members could vary.

Autocomplete for emoticons
Emoticons are great, but sometimes it's hard to remember which ones are available. The desktop client does not seem to autocomplete these. It would be nice if it did. Extra points for subtle graphical preview. Thanks!

Gravatar integration
It would be great to have gravatar integration for the profile photo.

@here mention tag
It would be great to have a mention tag like @all but just notifying those members that are *already* in the room (not all members that have access to it)

Granular Desktop Alert Settings
1) allow alert configuration for more granular events:
* @me alerts
* @all alerts
2) add keyword notifications, aside from just user mentions
3) allow user to specify how each specific notification should be deliveredSome IRC clients do this really well- and it's a truly useful feature if you're following many conversations & rooms: keywords make sure you don't miss a piece of conversation that's relevant to you.
Further, some alerts should really interrupt you (@me, for instance), while other alerts should just give you a chance to go see what's up (new chats, maybe).
Good alert management allows…

Add the ability to group users within the company
Right now, there are too many people in the lobby. It's hard to find people. Allow for at least one group to be associated to a user so in the lobby people can see the full alphabetical list or can show primary groups or something. Would be very helpful for Admins and users alike!
